Rubber castor wheels: 4 key specifications

Rubber is a shock-absorbent material that allows for smooth and quiet use. It's durable too, which means it’s suitable for internal and external use. And with solid-tyred wheels, you will never experience the inconvenience of a puncture.

With so many versions and different specifications, choosing the right product can get confusing. Here are the specifications you need to be aware of:

1. Consistency

Our solid rubber tyre wheels come as the name suggests, fitted with solid inflexible rubber for a long life without the risk of puncturing. But when you need something solid but slightly more yielding, the elastic tyre will give you a softer ride. We even stock some funky blue options if you wish to add some interesting style touches.

2. Centres

When it comes to what the centre of the wheels are made of, you can choose from four materials:

  • Aluminium: A light and durable alloy that contains an oxide coating that consistently renews itself, helping to keep the metal relatively safe from corrosion. Suitable for damp conditions and outdoors.
  • Steel: For heavier, stronger wheels with a higher load-carrying capacity.
  • Polypropylene: Choose a polypropylene wheel centre if you want something that cannot corrode in wet conditions and is highly resistant to denting or buckling. Polypropylene is a type of thermoplastic polymer resin. This range gives you a choice of colours including black, grey, and red.
  • Cast iron: Our cast iron wheel centres are built for long life and incredible strength. They give you a load-carrying capacity of anywhere up to 1500kg

3. Wheel diameters and width

Carefully measuring your existing wheels will tell you the right diameter and width for your replacement. The individual product pages feature helpful tables that list the wheel sizes available for each product. Check your old ones carefully because they often have these sizes stamped into them to make it easier to find the correct replacement.

4. Bore

The bore diameter is the internal size of the hole in the centre of the wheel. Getting this measurement right ensures that the new wheel will fit the existing axle assembly properly.

Rubber tyred wheels: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a castor and a wheel?

Wheels and castors are not the same thing, but many people confuse the two. Wheels spin on a single axis, so they only roll in one direction at a time. Castors include wheels in their design, but also have a mounting system which allows it to move in other directions.

Is polyurethane softer than rubber?

Both of these materials have flexible and elastic properties. Polyurethane is more durable than rubber, offering an amount of flexibility while remaining strong. However, rubber can withstand vibrations more effectively than polyurethane.

What wheel rolls best on carpet?

Wheels are used on carpet in settings such as offices. The most suitable wheels for carpets are made from metal or hard nylon, which will be able to cut through even the thickest of carpet. To improve mobility, castors with ball bearings are a smart choice.
